The Hornets Dismiss Their Manager Following a 10-Match Stint and Reappoint Javi Gracia as Head Coach
Watford Football Club have made the decision to terminate their manager's contract after just a brief period and 10 matches in charge, confirming the reappointment of ex-manager the Spanish coach as his successor.
Reports suggest that Pezzolano, who was hired in May to take over from Tom Cleverley, along with his backroom team, were told not to lead training on Wednesday as speculation about his imminent departure grew on the previous day.
The 40-year-old was called to a discussion where he was named the 11th manager Watford have let go since the start of 2020.
"The club is delighted to reappoint Gracia," stated the club's chief executive. "His enthusiasm, leadership and well-defined plan will foster consistency, togetherness and positive energy.
"We are sure many fans who wished Gracia had never departed in 2019. With this young and exciting squad, we are certain his experience and qualities are exactly what we need now."
The returning manager previously led Watford to the FA Cup final for the second time in the club's history in that year, but was dismissed several games into the next season and most recently coached at Leeds United in 2023.
"Personally, the feeling I have in this moment is that I'm returning home. It was the most enjoyable time of my career," he stated. "There are fond recollections and we have unfinished business here. For us, it's another important step in our journey.
"It is something special for us, and simultaneously we are highly motivated for this campaign. If we are united, we are stronger."
Pezzolano's sacking arrives even after the team's victory against Oxford at their home ground on Saturday, which moved them to eleventh place in the second tier after a slow start that earned five points from the initial six matches.
The Uruguayan is reportedly departed dismayed by the call to let him go, having led Watford to a undefeated streak of three games that also included a home win over Hull and a draw at Portsmouth, placing them three points off the promotion playoffs.
The coach arrived soon after the conclusion of last season with a proven track record of leading clubs to promotion in La Liga, Brazil and Uruguay.
